Lexus Chase at Leopardstown

The highlight of the festive season of racing at Leopardstown was undoubtedly the feature race of the Lexus Chase. Many friends and supporters of the luxury car brand were there and Mark Teevan and Aidan Conolly of Lexus Ireland were on hand to greet the large number of guests invited for a special luncheon. Among them were rugby player Brian O’Driscoll and his actress girlfriend Amy Huberman and top model Roz Lipsett, who returns to New York this week. TV news anchors Elaine Crowley and Anne Doyle were also there and enjoyed tips from sports presenter Shane O’Donoghue.

Dr. Tim O’Mahony, Chairman of Lexus Ireland mingled amongst the crowd and chatted to H.E. Keiichi Hayashi, Japanese Ambassador to Ireland. They reflected on a magnificent year, one which saw the 50th anniversary of relations between Ireland and Japan.

Style queen Lisa Fitzpatrick was in great form and was looking forward to spending the New Year in Dromoland Castle with her husband Paul and their two children. She also had the tough task of selecting the Best Dressed Lady on the day. After selecting a large group of fashionable fillies she whittled it down to Michelle Murphy-Lawless from Galway who was a vision in a black and cream ensemble.

With many guests delighted at having backed the winning horse, Denman, it was off to the nearby Beacon Hotel and further a field to the Four Seasons to celebrate.

Leopardstown Christmas Festival

The racing set were out in force on Tuesday night as Horse Racing Ireland & Leopardstown racecourse held a reception to launch the largest racing festival of the winter season - The Leopardstown Christmas Festival. This year is shaping up to be bigger and better then ever and judging by the large crowd at the launch, people are gearing up for the event already.

Amongst the horse loving crowd were Eamon Dunphy who made a heart warming speech on how proud he is to be Irish and how our trainers and jockeys are the best in the world. National Hunt jockey’s Davy Russell, Paul Carberry and Grand National winner Robert Power were there along with trainer Tony Martin, HRI Chief Executive Brian Kavanagh, Paddy Power, Lexus Ireland’s Mark Teevan, Clio O’Gara of Bewleys Hotels and HRI’s Michael O’Rourke all enjoyed the Christmas songs that were performed by Owen Brady on the night.

Regular Ladies Day attendee Faith Almond looked fabulous in a Moschino coat and was chatting to Horse Racing Irelands own Tamso Doyle (who was wearing this seasons black – a Jenny Packham dress) about what she will wear at the The Lexus Chase, on December 28th. The prize value on the day is €15,000, making it the richest Ladies Day prize in winter racing. The ‘Best Dressed Lady’ will win luxury Lexus chauffeur transfers to the five-star Ritz-Carlton, Powerscourt, where they will stay in the ultra-exclusive Presidential Suite for two nights, enjoying dinner for two at Gordon Ramsay, luxury ESPA Pampering, plus a €2,000 voucher for Brown Thomas - worth fighting for, I think you'll agree.

Others eager to find out more about the Ladies Day prize were socialites Nadine-Wai O’Flynn, Sandra Byrne, Emily O’Donell and jewellery designer Rebecca Davis who came along with her sister Emma. Liam Durkan came with his brother Neil and father Bill. The Durkans will be sponsoring the opening day of the festival and the feature race the Grade 1 Durkan New homes Novice Chase with a prize fund of €324,000.

At the launch Tom Burke, Manager of Leopardstown Racecourse, said “The National Hunt Festival at Leopardstown is the highlight of the Christmas calendar and we expect attendance to exceed last years record numbers. The overall prize-money of €1.3 million will attract the best horses providing top class racing to entertain the crowd.”

Katy French

It has been such a rollercoaster of a week in which, ultimately, Katy French lost her battle for life. I was shocked and deeply saddened by her death, as were most of the people in Ireland.

I knew Katy a few years, we were not close nor were we very good friends, but we would meet at various parties and social gatherings and chat briefly. She always had a smile on her face and an interesting story to tell. She was bright, clever and engaging and anyone who ever met her will attest to that. Never taking herself too seriously, and with her great sense of humour (and distinctive husky laugh!), Katy was always great company.

In her short life she managed to accomplish a great deal, perhaps more that most. She utilised her celebrity status to raise mush needed funds for charity, a favourite of hers being GOAL. I remember after she returned from a humanitarian mission to Calcutta a few months ago she was full of empathy, sincerity and hope for the people she met there. Touched by her experience, Katy was full of news and had, I’m sure, a lot more work planned to do.

In an article in the Sunday Independent she wrote: “Importantly, my journey to Calcutta helped me build on my own sense of self-worth. I realised that we are all here under the eyes of God to help each other and that He doesn't require us to succeed, only to try. In so doing, little by little, bit by bit, perhaps each one of us will reach our Goal.”

The last time I met Katy was at her 24th birthday party. She looked amazing and was the belle of the ball. That’s how I will remember her. It’s still unbelievable that a week later she was gone and only a few days ago I was paying my last respects at her funeral. So much more than a model and socialite, Katy French was one of the brightest sparks in Ireland and I’m delighted to have known her.

Sadly missed, but fondly remembered.

Gareth Lambe is the new cocktail IDÔL

The party posse were out en masse to kick off the week in style at the IDÔL Vodka Cocktail Challenge which was hosted in Eddie Irvine’s Cocoon bar on an otherwise quiet Monday night. Representatives from 10 of Dublin’s top bars displayed their mixing talents to compete in the contest, which saw a very high standard of entries.

The judging panel (consisting of socialite and Life Magazine columnist Triona McCarthy, Alan Chambers of Comans Wholesale, chef Dillon McGrath of Mint restaurant and mixing expert Michael Foggarty of The Celtic Whiskey Store) had a difficult task in deciding a winner but in the end it was Gareth Lambe of Venu Brasserie who secured the top place. His innovative entry was made up of 3 parts - a shot with specially made IDÔL vanilla ice-cream, a main cocktail which included IDÔL, plum jam and oregano and the finale of a canapé which had an IDÔL infused whole grape.

Among the large crowd in Cocoon last night were actor Dave Coffey of Dan & Becs fame, who is looking forward to the much anticipated release of the popular series on DVD. Barbara McCarthy was with her pal Ben Bringer, she's on the crest of a wave with her new RTE show Highly Recommended, which also features Ben Dunne. Samantha McGarry and her friend Ruth Connolly flew in from Ghent for the party, which was also attended by Nadine Wai – O’Flynn, Emily O’Donnell and Andrew Rudd of Ireland AM. Richard Holder, of the fashion brand Tom Tailor, took time out of his hectic schedule to attend. He is busy working on the roll-out of 8 new Tom Tailor stores across the country over the next 3 months. Interior designer Judith Giltinane was there with her sister Liz, she’s just finished decorating the new Churchfields development in Ashbourne. Meanwhile Dr. Marco Lombardi, deputy head of the Italian Embassy, founder of Blacktie Niall O’Farrell, jewellery designer Rebecca Davies, PR gurus Sinead Ryan and Puffin Moynihan and entertainer Alan Amsby also enjoyed the evening.

Apart from the cocktails, the big hit of the party was Avila Lipsett, the MC, who had the guests roaring with laughter throughout the contest. Despite it being her first live performance gig she proved to be hugely popular with her witty banter which kept everyone entertained.

Second place in the contest went to Paul Lambert of Saba and third place to Zibi Kolodey of Krystle. The winner, Garth Lambe of Venu, will now be jetting off, with a friend, to New York where he will enjoy 4 nights in the trendy W Hotel.

Heeeee's here...

Sile Seoige pictured with Dustin and Santa Claus at Dundrum Town Centre.
It was bright lights and jingle bells as Santa Claus arrived at Dundrum Town Centre last week and performed the official turning on of the Christmas Lights, where over a million starlight bulbs were set to illuminate the centre and the smiling faces of all the children. Now, I know it's still November and trust me, I do think it's too early for ANYTHING remotely connected to Chirstmas to be seen or heard but, hey, it's for the kids. Yes, the lights on Grafton Street are pretty impressive and the windows at BT have thankfully reverted back to a more festive theme (remember last year's creation?) but if I were in charge (more's the pity I'm not) I would place an embargo on all Christmas marketing until, say, December 10th. That way we all wouldn't be so sick of it come the 23rd.

Anyhoo, on arrival at Dundrum, the merry man in red was accompanied by special guests Dustin the Turkey, Sile Seoige and Aidan Power from the hit TV show Class Act, along with some of the show’s finalists who performed during the evening. After turning on the lights, he (Santa that is, not Aidan Power) made his way to his spectacular Dundrum based Winter Workshop, which is located on The Mill Pond, in Town Square, where he met the crowd who were eagerly awaiting his arrival.

And they'll be even more eager by the time the 25th of December rocks around!

Club! Man...

At the spectacular Mini Clubman launch were: 1. Izabela Chudzicka and Jenny Buckley; 2. Mary O'Keeffe and Emer White; 3. Nicola Bissett; 4. DJ Arveene; 5. David Brittain, Avila Lipsett and Nick Thomas.

Mini Clubman launch party

Recently, under the unblinking eye of Nambulc, Ringmaster Extraordinaire… and in front of hundreds of eager fans, the new MINI Clubman was finally unveiled in the curious surroundings of The House of Oddities, located in the midst of Dublin’s rejuvenated city quays.

The arrival of the new MINI Clubman has been keenly anticipated since the concept was first shown in 2005. Also referred to as The Other MINI, it is a MINI for a new generation. It oozes the personality of its MINI cousin but with a deliciously individual twist. The swinging ‘60s had a hand in the Clubman development. The new car takes inspiration and styling cues from the Morris Mini Traveller, Austin Mini Countryman and the Mini Clubman Estate. The new MINI Clubman nevertheless stays true to the successful, modern MINI design language.

With a modus operandi of ‘Fun needs space…’ and ‘Predictable is boring…’ the event to mark the arrival of The Other MINI certainly espoused those traits. The House of Oddities turned the traditional car launch inside out, back to front and put it firmly back onto a whole new level.

In a warehouse transformed into a carnival of the unusual, MINI Clubman made its debut under the watchful eye of Nambluc, the Ringmaster and a cohort comprising the Animal Trainer, the Young Knife Thrower Apprentice, the Clairvoyant, the Human Cannonball & the Charlatan. Also in attendance were actor Dave Coffey, TV presenter Jenny Buckley, Benoit Bringer and Avila Lipsett, Sarah Heaney and BMW MD Sean Green, Wes Quirke and designer Graham Cruz.

This unconventional, old-style travelling circus fused with avant-garde theatre performance art known as The House of Oddities is the natural home of the MINI Clubman. Special guests, also making their Irish debut, included Lucifire - the internationally renowned purveyor of the finest quality burlesque pyrotica - bringing her feisty & fiery abilities to the evening’s proceedings and Cirq-U - the death-defying aerial duo - performing physical theatre to the delight of the 500 invited guests.

All these elements combined to ensure that the MINI Clubman’s arrival in Ireland was a night that no one will forget.

Among the guests were Margaret McCarthy, who was accompanied by her sister Grainne Stevenson and daughter Triona, Cllr. Deirdre Clune, artist and designer Johanna Connor, Emmy Jeffery and Jeanette Corkery, whose sister Shelly is Head of Fashion Direction at Brown Thomas.

Having just undergone a €4m investment, Brown Thomas Cork has never been looking better and GM Caroline Counihan said she was delighted to welcome so many loyal customers to the preview of their of top international and Irish designers.

Renowned Irish artist, John Caffrey showed a collection of his beautiful work for an exclusive Art Benefit in The Merrion Hotel on Thursday evening. At Caffery’s last show he raised over €40,000 for the Mater Hospital and I’m pleased to report that he exceeded that sum this time round.

Harvey Nichols, the mecca for fashion lovers, hosted a spectacular Autumn / Winter show on Wednesday evening much to the delight and amazement of all in attendance. Guests were greeted by an extravagant in-store tropical jungle with exotic plants, a waterfall and real live birds. Happy Birthday Jack!

Enjoying the hospitality of Jack Daniels were: 1. Shane Burns and Kim Lowry; 2. Gemma Moore, Maeve Larkin and Hannah O'Leary; 3. Melissa Nortje and Anneke Mulder; 4. Helena Murphy and Cormac Battle; 5. Emma Barns winner of the Harley Davidson motorbike.

The month-long celebrations for Jack Daniel’s 157th birthday came to a climax with a rock ‘n’ roll style birthday party presided over by top 2FM DJ Cormac Battle. In fine rock and roll tradition, one lucky Jack Daniel’s fan was presented with the keys to a fantastic Harley Davidson motorbike, following promotions taking place this September in 60 venues nationwide.

Jack’s Birthday is celebrated throughout the entire month of September. Why? A town fire destroyed the courthouse records, including the birth certificate of one Mr Jack Daniel. Conflicting dates on Jack’s and his mother’s headstones have left his date of birth in question so he gets a whole month of birthday celebrations. But for a man as unique as Jack Daniel, one day just wouldn’t seem proper anyway!

Guests at the party were entertained by Ireland’s hottest act, DIRECTOR. Hailing from Dublin’s Northside, the meticulously crafted pop of this fantastic foursome is set to thrill the select audience of competition winners and invited guests. Snowball and Till the Morning Comes, selected from Jack Daniel’s nationwide JD SET series of gigs supported DIRECTOR, having been named Jack Daniel’s Hardest Working Bands. Now in its 5th year, the JD Set is all about encouraging, promoting and mentoring dedicated and ambitious hard working Irish bands and giving them a platform to perform around the country.

Commenting on the JD Birthday Celebrations, Noel John McLoughlin of Jack Daniel’s Ireland:
“Jack’s birthday is now a permanent fixture on Ireland’s rock ’n’ roll calendar. Jack Daniel’s has a hugely loyal fan base with a keen interest in live music – invitations to our annual Birthday Party are like gold dust. The party just gets bigger and better every year. The combination of great music, great drinks and a great Harley Davidson give-away makes for an electric atmosphere.”

On show were items from the very special 40th Anniversary collection, which was the protagonist of the celebrations that Benetton held in Paris to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the brand. This collection takes its inspiration from the typical Benetton elements of colour and wool, used in an ever-new and creative way to convey the brand’s spirit as a point of convergence of cultures, races and nationalities.

The Benetton company is present in Ireland with more than 50 stores and new openings are planned. Among the guests welcomed by Nicola & Daniela Capone of Benetton Ireland were US ambassador H.E. Thomas C. Fashionistas

Even more fashion was celebrated last week (despite Dublin Fashion Week having ended the previous). On Thursday Louise Kennedy showcased her A/W 2007 collection at her beautiful home and atelier on Dublin’s Merrion Square. Invited guests, such as Lisa Fitzpatrick, Eimear Mulhearn and Jackie Bolger, were treated to a salon style fashion show, while enjoying champagne from Louise’s new Tipperary Crystal Aurora line.

Inspiration for this seasons collection was taken from early 20th century Russian nobility, who fled the Russian revolution and went on to influence the world of fashion. Opulent colours, sumptuous fabrics and subtle detailing made it one of Kennedy's most exciting yet.

Meanwhile, the ladies who lunch took pleasure in viewing the Brown Thomas A/W collections at the annual ISPCC lunch, which was hosted by Pamela Flood in The Shelbourne Hotel. A Jacobs Creek Sparkling Rosé reception greeted the 350 patrons, who marveled at an Hermès ensemble (flown in especially for the event) which opened the show. Other labels showcased included Burberry Prorsum, Giambattista Valli and Gucci.

Enjoying the luncheon were Shelly Corkery and Stephen Sealey of Brown Thomas, ISPCC Committee members Valerie Craughwell and Penny Dix, Alison Doody, designer Helen Cody and Aishling Kelly, who, with her husband Cpt. Tom Fox, hosted the christening of their first born, Daniel, the following day in Newbridge, Co. Kildare.

House of Fraser

The British Ambassadors Residence in Sandyford proved to be the ideal setting for the launch of House of Fraser’s Autumn/Winter collections ’07 on Wednesday evening. The new look for House of Fraser’s exclusive own brand “Linea” was showcased on the evening with exclusive jewellery, footwear and handbag ranges joining the fashion ensembles.

The Ambassador, H.E. David Reddaway, welcomed guests, including Rosanna Davison, Lorraine Keane, Jane McDonnell of The Gloss and designer Helen McAlinden, to his beautiful home and even gave guided tours. A Moet & Chandon champagne reception set the tone of the evening as the fashionistas swapped summer holiday stories. House of Fraser representatives Matt Chambers Caroline Perham flew over especially for the event and were thrilled with show, commenting that an event like it would be hard to rival in the UK.

Picnic-ers

In the VIP Bacardi B-Live area at Electric Picnic were: 1. Ruth O'Hare, Tara Duff and Loraine McCrawley; 2. Evan Saier and Marcina Manraj; 4. Chantelle Megan and Maria Lynch; 5. Sandra Ryan and Louise Looney; 6. Lisa Bergkvist, Johan Alennius and Monica Wolff.

Electric Picnic

Probably a highlight of the entire Irish summer was last weekends Electric Picnic, which saw over 32,000 revellers descend on the Crosby family’s Stradbally Hall estate in Co. Offaly. With the VIP area resembling a typical weekend night in Renards, there was no shortage of well-known faces among the crowds.

Event organiser John Reynolds made sporadic appearances, taking time out of his busy schedule to ensure that his guests were enjoying the festivities. Among those I spotted were Jonathan Rhys Myers, singer Paul Brady and broadcasters Dave Fanning and Ryan Tubridy.

As always Naoise Nunn’s Leviathan marquee, with its lively mix of debate and discussion, was a popular haunt. David McWilliams, Minister Eamon Ryan TD and writer Irvine Welsh were some of those in attendance, while publisher John Ryan paid a special visit from New York.

Meanwhile enjoying the cocktails over at the Bacardi B-Live VIP area were TV3’s Collette Fitzpatrick and her boyfriend Neil McDermot, Niall McCrudden, artist Darryn Lee and publisher Trevor White. The big after parties, however, continued at the luxurious Heritage Hotel in nearby Killenard where many of the performers were based.

Regularly topping the polls as the best music festival in Ireland (and Europe) Electric Picnic continues to go from strength to strength, just ask any of the 34,000 revellers.

Knuttel MINI

At the party to unveil the Knuttel MINI were: 1. Graham Knuttel with his MINI; 2. Mo Kelly; 3. Anusia Grennell and Rasher; 4. Emily O'Donnell and Marissa Mackle; 5. Jenny Huston and Ingrid Goodwin.

Knuttel MINI

Associated with everything young, hip and trendy, MINI cars once again pushed the ‘cool’ factor to the extreme at a party this week. They recently commissioned artist Graham Knuttell to paint a MINI and unveiled the finished piece at the Gallery of Photography in Temple Bar on Tuesday evening.

Encapsulating the true spirit of MINI, the one-off car is a vibrant expression of Knuttell’s work, with vivid colours and his trademark faces adorning the body. A long time fan of the car (he’s owned several throughout the years) he wanted to portray the sense of adventure that begins with owning one. And he’s in good company too - other creatives who have customised MINI cars include Donatella Versace, Mario Testino and Missoni.

Among the guests admiring the art on wheels were TV presenter Sile Seoige, Ben Bringer and Emily O’Donnell, Marisa Mackle, top chef Dylan McGrath of Mint Restaurant and Dee Breen of Harvey Nichols. Maria Fusco, who recently closed her popular Ave Maria fashion boutique, was also there and informed me of her plans to open a new wine bar.

The Graham Knuttel MINI will visit dealerships throughout the country over the coming months and, according to brand manager Nicola Bissett, will then be auctioned for charity.
