The last remnants of this year's Electric Picnic should be disappearing right about now from the grounds of Stradbally Hall, Co. Laois. The 2-day music festival, which took place over the weekend, was attended by an estimated 25,000 people, with in excess of 15,000 camping on the grounds of the country estate.
Acts such as The Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire, DJ Laurent Garnier, Goldfrapp and Kraftwerk were massive hits with the crowds, while big name DJ Fat Boy Slim disappointed some. Does it get tough at the top?
Marketed as a "boutique" festival, Electric Picnic certainly hit all the right notes and proved that a gig of this scale can be a pleasure, unlike other big festivals around the country. Alternative areas, such as Lost Vagueness and the Comedy Tent, proved successful and a great diversion from the norm.
Among those I spotted backstage at the Bacardi B-Bar were Susan Vasquez, Nicola and Sarah Connolly, Paul Trainer from The Dubliner, Aoife O'Reilly. MTV presenter DP Fitzgerald, who was roving the grounds with his camera crew in tow, was also there. I still haven't seen the piece he did with me at the Oxegen music festival - but I've been assured it looks good!
Also enjoying the festival were comedy agent Naoise Nunn, of Aprés Match fame, singers David Kitt, who was camping in the VIP campsite, and Mundy, who was at the James Blunt gig. TV producer Cillian Fennell, Sinead Ryan and Malachy Geelan, stylist Roxanne Parker, promoter Buzz O'Neill and Aidan Bishop, no doubt there to support his big brother, comedian Des.
Rumour has it that organiser John Reynolds, of PoD events, is planning to stage next year's Electric Picnic over 3 days. Bring it on!

The Premiere of Pride & Prejudice
Thursday night saw the red carpet rolled out again at the Savoy movie theatre for the latest Irish film premiere. A plethora of paparazzi were lined up to snap some cast a crew of Pride & Prejudice, who flew into Dublin for the event.
Before the movie, TV presenter Caroline Morahan introduced the film stars, with Matthew MacFadyen, who plays Mr. Darcy, getting huge support from the females in the audience. Swoon! Rosamund Pike, who plays Jane Bennet, looked amazing in a red and orange Prada number.
A romantic story in all it's period drama glory with great performances from stalwarts such as Donald Sutherland, Judie Dench and Brenda Blethyn, as well as the aforementioned younger stars.
The feel good factor of Pride & Prejudice is high on the scale. It's humorous, witty and an all round nice movie. You could bring your granny to it and she'd love it. No sex or violence here, thank you very much.
As a few people lingered in the theatre to compose themselves and wipe away a few stray tears, a select number of guests attended the after party in The Front Lounge on Parliament Street. Delicious Jameson cocktails were mixed with fervour as guests mingled and tried to get up close and personal with Mr. Darcy.

Author Kate Thompson, models Lee Bradshaw and Fergus Kiely (who's just back from a 2 year stint in Australia), Robbie Fox of Renards, Kieran Tobin from Irish Distillers and his lovely wife Carol, Donagh and Kay Lane, producer Bill Hughes with pal Paddy Bollard and Peter and Rosemary O'Connell.

TV3, Ireland's independent TV network, today celebrated the new autumn season of programming in style at a launch held at The Morrison Hotel earlier today. A host of famous faces were on hand to see the first glimpse of what entertainment will be on offer.
TV3 enjoys being the second most watched station in Ireland and this autumn sees the introduction of many top quality new shows, including Revelations, Committed and Hell's Kitchen USA. The ever popular X-Factor and Pop Idol are also returning.
One of the most interesting new commissions however will be a brand new prime time talk show. Filmed weekly from a Dublin venue, in front of an invited audience, the one hour entertainment show will also take a wry look at the week's news and bring some unexpected twists as the host unleashes comedy challenges and stunts on the public. Sounds rather Graham Norton to me, but that remains to be seen.
As Matthew Sallway, Director of Programming, announced this there was immeadiate speculation as to who the presenter was to be. That was until none other that Brendan Courtney was revealed. Brendan, who has been forging a successful career in the UK of late, will return to our screens with this exciting mix of entertainment in the near future and told me that he's very excited about it and looking forward to being on Irish TV again. Did I mention Graham Norton already?!
Among those enjoying the event were Maura Derrane, Mark Cagney and Debbie O'Donnell of breakfast show Ireland AM (who I am hoping to join again, as Fashion Stylist, later this year); news anchors Claire Byrne, Alan Cantwell, Colette Fitzpatrick and Elaine Crowley. TV3 Chairman James Morris was also there, as was Laura Bermingham, Martin King and Sybill Mulcahy.

Making a special appearance for the launch were Coronation Street stars Susie Blake (who plays Bev Unwin) and Jennie McAlpine (Fiz Brown); Kelvin Fletcher (who plays Andy Sugden) and Charley Webb (Debbie Dingle) from Emmerdale and Liz May Brice, Rebecca Hazelwood and Antonia Okonma from Bad Girls.

Make-up forever
Last night I had attended a small dinner in honour of celebrity make-up artist Daniel Sandler, who works with Bourjois Cosmetics. He was in town to record a feature on RTE's Off the Rails, which will be broadcast on the first episode of the new series.
He's worked with big names such as Kate Moss, Mena Suvari, Naomi Campbell, Gareth Gates, Rachel Weisz, Yasmin Le Bon, Boy George and Jade Jagger. I could go on, but you get the picture. Let's just say his talent is always in demand and he regularly travels around Europe, making lucky girls and boys look even prettier than they actually are.
Last night's dinner, in the ever popular Bang Café, was hosted by the ever charming Luca Hickey, head of Bourjois Cosmetics in Ireland. Business must be good - he's driving a new Ferarri.
Daniel was accompanied by his UK publicist, the lovely Lesley Chivers. PR dynamo Louise Byrne was also there, looking great after a hectic time at the recent Rose of Tralee, where she was working with her client, Newbridge Silverware.
Making up the blond trio was the beautiful Pamela Flood, who co-presents Off the Rails. Pamela is in the process of buying a new pad and is looking to move to the Rathfarnham area in the near future.
Now that will be a stylish abode.

Congratulations Clarion!
The Clarion Hotel at the IFSC, and it's GM, Dermot De Loughry, hosted a lunch today to celebrate being named the International Clarion Hotel of the Year, by Choice Hotels International, it's parent company.
Choice Hotels annually present the Hotel of the Year Award, which demonstrates excellence in all aspects of their service and operations. The best of each brand internationally is selected by the Choice Hotels' International division, which evaluates the hotels on a variety of factors. Mr. De Loughry was delighted with the award and paid tribute to all the staff members who were involved. To celebrate the win, each staff member will be offered a short holiday in the newly opened Clarion Hotel & Resort in Sligo.
The Clarion Hotel, which has been open since 2001, includes the the acclaimed SanoVitae Health and Fitness Club, Kudos Bar and the award-winning Sinergie Restaurant. Today's lunch was hosted in the luxurious penthouse (which, incidentally, can be yours for around €1.7 million), with Andrea Molloy of the Clarion, publisher Michael Heary and RTE's Val Joyce among the guests.
The ever glamorous Anne Boylan was also there with her good friend Shirley Beere, who was looking tanned after a recent trip to Cyprus. Shirley informed me that she and her husband, millionaire businessman and author Wyn Beere, are hoping to moved from their luxury Stepaside home. They are currently looking at re-locating to the exclusive Eagle Valley development near Powerscourt, Co. Wicklow.

O2 in the Park
One of the biggest gigs of the year in Dublin took place over the weekend, with almost 100,000 music lovers converging in the President of Ireland's back garden, Phoenix Park. Now in it's fourth year, O2 in the Park proved to be as popular as ever with a terrific line-up of artists.
Among them were Charlotte Church, who rocked the crowd with her brand of new angel-grows-up material. She didn't stick around long though and sped off to the airport after her set. Tyler James and his gravity defying hair had much more time to kill and was floating around the backstage and VIP areas for hours before he went on stage. Happy to meet the people and sign autographs, this guy knows how to work it.
Former Atomic Kitten member Natasha Hamilton performed with a phalanx of backing singer girls. It could have been a case of happy families as her ex. Fran Cosgrave was co-presenting the gig, along with their 2-year old son Josh was also there.
Hazel Kaneswaren and her big hair performed a great set, as did Simon Casey and new band The Rags. Among those enjoying the VIP hospitality were Louis Walsh, Killian O'Sullivan, Niamh Elliott and You're A Star Celebrity winner David Mitchell. I like your tie. When Dylan Jones, editor of GQ magazine, pays you that compliment it carries a lot more kudos that it would from most other lips. My evening was off to an excellent start.
Jones was in Dublin, as guest of honour, for the launch of the new Nokia 8800, their first luxury mobile phone. The great and the good, and the good-looking, gathered in Ice at the Four Seasons Hotel (note: it's no longer called Ice Bar!), to celebrate the unveiling of this beautiful piece of kit.
Encased in a sleek stainless steel cover, the timeless design of the 8800 is a beauty to behold. Slide it open to reveal the fine pitched screen (equivalent to the density of a laptop screen), which is totally scratch resistant. Listen to the specially commissioned sound elements, works of art in their own right, composed by Academy and Grammy award-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. Add in the other great features of the 8800 and it's easy to see why Dylan Jones was happy to endorse it.
Having a varied career in fashion and journalism behind him, Dylan added another string to his bow a few years ago as a judge on the reality TV show Model Behaviour. The hugely popular show will hopefully be returning to our screens next year, as Dylan informed me that only last week he'd had a meeting with the producers.
Enjoying the party last night were master tailor Louis Copeland, who looked dapper as always, and Nadine Wai - O'Flynn of Principle Management with Michael Kelly. Lord Henry Mount Charles was also there, with his wife Lady Iona, maintaining an uncharacteristic low profile. Perhaps disappointed that there will be no concert at his home, Slane Castle, this year?
Richard Kavanagh, who's off to Quinta de Lago next week, was with Alan Amsby and Gavin Lambe - Murphy, who cut a dash with his new hairstyle. Also there were Sonia Reynolds, with pal Fiona Gratzer, Alex Fitzgerald and Simon Arnold. Kelley Cousins and Aoife O'Reilly looked fab and were all set for tomorrow's O2 in the Park mega gig, which kicks off at 12-noon in Phoenix Park.
As we left with generous goodie bags (Moet & Chandon champagne, delicious Valrhona chocolate and Garden of Ireland scents) rumour had it that there was a rapidly forming waiting list for the Nokia 8800. Exclusive to Brown Thomas - get there quick.
Question of the week: Which recent addition to the social scene is charming all and sundry, with his air of wealth and sophistication? Truth is he's a dodgy character with more debt than a small African country.

A Rose by any other name...

Congratulations to Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain who was crowned Rose of Tralee 2005 this week. Aoibhinn, who represented Mayo, was one of the favourites to win the title and walk with the specially commissioned Newbridge Silverware tiara.
Not just a pretty face, 22 year-old Aoibhinn has a first class honours degree in Theiretical Physics from UCD and plans to continue her post grad studies in Bio-Physics. Her impressive academic achievements include a student placement in 2004 at CERN (Centre European de Research Nuclear) in Geneva, awards in the international Mathematical Contest in Modelling, an Entrance Scholarship from UCD in 2001 and scholarships from Bord Na Gaeilge.
A natvie Irish speaker, she loves singing and also plays concertina, piano and guitar. She has been a member of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann for many years and has awards for sean-nos singing. She has also won awards for short story writing and poetry.
Phew! We should send her as our representative to the Miss Universe contest.

Chukka!
The sun was shining for the 6th Annual Fado Ladies International Polo, which took place on Sunday last at The All Ireland Polo Grounds in Phoenix Park. This social calendar staple raises funds for The Bubble Gum Club, a charity that arranges special holidays and outings for children in hospitals throughout Ireland, who are suffering from serious and life threatening illnesses and require on-going medical treatment. Celebrating it's 10th Birthday in 2004, the Bubble Gum Club has helped over 10,000 children since it's inception by businessman Peter Harris
A team from Yale University flew in from the U.S., captained by Eileen Flint with their star player (and one of the best female players in the world) Tamara Vestey. Other world class players included the Argentinean, Marianella Castagnola, 2 handicap player and Ireland’s Siobhan Herbst, who has just returned from the German International Polo Tournament in Pinnow. Chief umpire was Major Hugh Dawnay, world renowned polo tutor and now author. Also in Dublin for the event was Katrina Jennings, a commentator who covers all the major polo matches on the east coast of America.
The event also saw a show of renowned designer Deborah Veale's Autumn / Winter 05/06 collection. Designed to take the professional woman effortlessly through from day to evening and into relaxed weekend wear, the versatile collection of separates combine to provide an outfit to suit any occasion. Fashion that evolves to encompass a perfect balance between tailored and softly structured separates

Rose of Tralee
I'm off to Tralee, Co. Kerry this evening for the annual Rose of Tralee festival. Now in it's 47th year, the festival continues to go from strength to strength, thanks to the input of generous sponsors, such as Newbridge Silverware.
For those of you not familiar with the Rose of Tralee, let me explain. The main attraction of the festival is choosing and crowning a Rose of Tralee. Essentially a beauty contest, with more onus on the personality, it attracts entries from all over the world and is broadcast on national television. This year's contest is being presented by Ray D'Arcy.
The ever popular Rose Ball will take place on Friday night in the beautiful Brandon Hotel. This black tie gala is many people's opportunity to see the Roses for the first time, before their debut at the parades over the following days.
The weekend always attracts many familiar faces and last year, for example, I bumped into top celebrity magician Keith Barry, TV presenters Alan Hughes and Ryan Tubridy, PR guru Joanne Byrne, former gossip columnist turned singer Jason O'Callaghan, media consultant Breda Brown and style queen Celia Holman - Lee.
This year's judges are newscaster Sharon Nà Bheoláin, Oonagh Doyle of Newbridge Silverware, Ken Barry of Smart Telecom, former International Rose Larna Canoy - Lackner and Terry O'Brien, Lord Mayor of Tralee.
The contest takes place on Monday and Tuesday (22 & 23) and will be broadcast on RTE 1 at 8pm, when we will see last year's Rose Orla O'Shea hand over the title. You can click here to see all the girls who will be smiling it out for that coveted Newbridge Silverware tiara.

Drink Pink
It's official, pink is the new black. Mateus Rose hosted their annual Drink Pink Party in the Glass Room at Dublin’s Ocean Bar last night. The summer soiree dusted a pink hue over Charlotte Quay as members of the media and invited guests donned their best attire and sipped crisp Mateus Rose from champagne flutes.
A distinctly understated affair, the party provided the perfect antidote to the soccer mania gripping the city. Ireland 1 - Italy 2, for those of you who care. Actually, now that I mention soccer, have you seen the video clip of German player Sabastian Kehl's, ahem, tackle?! Go forth and Google.

Birthday Girl
TV star Caroline Morahan, with new red hair style, enjoying her birthday in Cruzzo, Malahide.

Stunning TV presenter Caroline Morahan celebrated her birthday at the weekend with an informal dinner in cool Cruzzo restaurant in Malahide. Overlooking the marina, guests enjoyed Jacob's Creek Rose (definitely the in drink this summer) while admiring the beautiflul sea view.
Caroline, who will co-present this year's O2 In the Park concert on the 27th, is sporting a fabulous new hair do. Gone are her dark tresses in favour for a more sexy red look. She told me that Mark O'Keeffe of Brown Sugar salon spent 6 and a half hours on her hair. Hey, she's worth it!
Among those at the dinner were her parents Jim and Tina; her sister, PR guru Olivia, with daughter Ella; Dara Conlon, Kathleen Meeney (mother of actor Colm), Orla Noonan and Micheál Burke.

Garden party
The launch of ‘Garden of Ireland’, took place in the garden of the luxurious Merrion Hotel last week. ‘Garden of Ireland’, (produced by Fragrances of Ireland), is inspired by the county of Wicklow and draws on the scents of the county to produce a fresh, wholesome range of soaps, bath salts, body whip, hand creams, shower gels, lavender sachets and solid colognes. Oh yes please!
The collection is available in six scents including Sweet Lavender, which uses oil distilled from the company’s lavender fields in Co. Wicklow. Soaps and baths salts are wrapped in pure linen and each item is finished off with colourful embroidered ribbon (which reminded me of the Hermés ribbon), making the range very tactile.
The ‘Garden of Ireland’ collection combines traditional Irish elements with a comprehensive modern product design.
Among those sipping Kir Royales, while enjoying the harpist by the fountain, were MD of Unislim Ireland Fiona Gratzer with pal Debbie Cooke, both looking bronzed after a recent trip to Marbella. Jill Cox of Beaufield Mews Restaurant was enjoying the evening and just back from Belfast where she was sourcing artists for an up coming exhibition.
Fashion designer Cyane Kingston was also there with her partner, architect Simon Walker and their son Patrick, who had just celebrated his first birthday. Socialites are getting younger and younger - or maybe it's me getting older.
Cyane designed bespoke outfits for the event, which were worn beautifully by models Aisling Crowley and Katherine Calvert. Also in attendance was dapper gent Godfrey Deeney, who is European editor of Fashion Wire Daily. There wasn't a fashion faux pas in sight, I'm happy to report.

Ah, have a heart
Dublin’s social set descended on the stylish Beacon Hotel last week for the launch of a new ball in the social diary, The Have a Heart Ball, which will be held on September 9th 2005 in The Four Seasons Hotel. It promises to be one of the most memorable nights of the summer, and with Miss World Maria Julia Mantilla Garcia as the guest of honour, the evening promises to be a stylish one. The event was officially launched at a reception in The Beacon, to commence an awareness campaign for The Heartbeat Trust.
The launch reception was a wonderful event in the luxurious surroundings of The Beacon. Jacob's Creek Rose brought a touch of crimson to the event and there were lots of Lindt Chocolates Heart Chocolates for guests. Ciaran Nagle from The Irish Tenors entertained the guests with a few lively numbers. Guests who attending the launch reception included patrons of the ball Mike Murphy and Brian Kerr.
Also in attendance were FMI Olivia Tracey, actors George McMahon and Claudia Carroll from Fair City, socialite fundraiser Caroline Downey, Lisa Fitzpatrick and David and Rachel Agar to name but a few. also present was Alan Amsby, who is finalising plans for a new TV show where he will be getting many famous faces to bare their souls! The sporting world was represented by Eamonn Couglan, Ken Doherty and Graeme Souness.
The objective of the Have a Heart Ball is to raise funds for The Heartbeat Trust and to create awareness for this new and important charity. This year the committee expects to raise funds in excess of EUR 100, 000 to provide funding for Heart Failure services and research activities carried out by the SVUH Heart Failure research team. The organizing committee includes Carmel Conlon, Dr. Ken Mc Donald, Dr. Mark Ledwidge, Eanna Casey, Jim Walsh, Karen O'Keefe, Krish Naidoo, Krisha Naidoo, Lisa Fitzpatrick, Niall McCrudden, PJ Gibbons and Tara O'Connor. Newbridge Silverware, Maxwell Motors and Jacob's Creek are all sponsors of the ball in September.
The Have a Heart Ball will commence with a champagne and cocktail reception followed by a four-course meal with wines sponsored by Jacob's Creek. After dinner David Agar will put a number of exiting lots under the hammer in the auction to include a Knuttell painting and 23 signed Premiership jerseys from UK, Scottish and Irish football teams. After the auction dancing with commence to Paddy Cole and his band and DJ till the wee hours- with lots more surprises! Guests will be encouraged to wear something red on the night. There are a limited number of tables left for the each each costing €2,500. Call Tara on 01 - 8458177.

At the culmination of another action-packed week of racing and related festivities in Galway this week, the fifth annual Race Ball, the black tie extravaganza held every year during Galway Race Week, was a huge success on last week in the Radisson SAS Hotel Galway.
This year’s gala ball, sponsored by the Morricom Group with associate sponsors the Sporting Emporium and Independent Newspapers Day & Night, was one of the best yet featuring Grainne Seoige as MC, Nick Leeson, ex-Barings Bank, in charge of breaking the bank for the charity auction, Paddy Cole providing the music and a number of surprise musical and other guests to entertain the 750 strong guest-list until the not so early hours.
Guests this year were treated to a delicious Jacob's Creek bubbly reception and had the opportunity to win a fantastic prize of a luxurious trip for 2 to Las Vegas courtesy of US Airways and the Luxor Hotel among a spectacular list of auction items and prizes.
The 750 strong guest list comprises many people from the racing world alongside many more regular attendees at the Galway Races with a passing interest in racing. This year attending the ball were jockeys Berry Geraghty, Ross Geraghty and Paul Carberry, multi-millionaire businessman J.P. McManus, Dermot and Mark Weld, Sky News' Grainne Seoige and husband Stephen Callanan, TV3 presenter Alan Hughes, Paul Collins of Today FM, comedian Tommy Tiernan and CEO of Morricom Group, John Cox.
The voluntary organising committee comprises a number of people with various ties to Galway and the Races including Henry Cleary of Barclays Bank, Rachel Naughton of AIB, Miriam Kelly of A&L Goodbody, Joe Mitchell of Intel, Leo Casey of IBI Corporate Finance and Catherine O'Grady of Irish Distillers.
The fabulous event raised in excess of €100,000 for a number of charities including Cancer Care West, Life Pregnancy Care Galway, The Simon Community and Cricklewood Homeless Concern.

Back to the grind
After a brief hiatus in France and Spain I'm back - more wrecked than relaxed, if truth be told.
While on my travels I had dinner in the wonderful La Cour d'Eymet, in the little town of Eymet in the Dordogne, France. Amazing food. I also stayed in the newly opened and achingly hip (I'm sure that's how Wallpaper* Magazine would describe it) B-Hotel in Barcelona. With temperatures up to 38, the rooftop pool in the B was the only place to be.
Two places to add to an itinery.

Life's a holiday
It's the time of year that all and sundry leave their regular bases and hit the road to sunnier climes. If you are not one of the thousands heading to the Galway Races this week then you may find the social scene in Dublin, and around the country, a bit on the quiet side.
Among those westward bound to the Ballybrit racecourse are Geraldine Mahony, Judith Giltinane, Paul Collins, Grainne Seoige, Albert Reynolds, Quentin Fottrell and Hilary Cahill.
Others who will be racing in Galway this week include An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, various Government Ministers and ploiticos, who will be entertaining the masses in the legendary Fianna Fail tent. Paying for the privilage to press the flesh. Personally, I don't get it.
And what about the rest? Well, rest is indeed what people have been getting lots of lately as the summer holiday season is in full swing. Just back from European vacations are TV presenter Caroline Morahan, who was in Pollo, Italy, and her stunning colleague Pamela Flood, who was in Sitges. Gavin Lambe - Murphy lived it up in Capri with friends.
DJ Hugh Scully got some R'nR in Croatia. Vivienne Connolly and Mark Dunne were in Palma and socialite Norman Smurfit hosted her annual charity gala in nearby Marbella last weekend. Sinead Ryan and Malachy Geelan also enjoyed Spain, as did RTE newscaster Aengus MacGrianna, while ex rugby captain Niall Woods had a ball in France.
Further afield were Kerri Galligan, who has just returned from Figi and L.A., Glenda Gilson, who has been to New Zealand and Ronan and Yvonne Keating who were in Faro. Jetting off soon will be Bono and his family to their South of France villa; Louis Walsh to his place in South Beach, Miami and John Healy of The Four Seasons is off to Spain.
I need a holiday myself, so am off to France for a week, followed by another week in Spain, where I'm sure to bump into many familiar faces, judging by it's popularity.

Music is the answer
There really are a pleathora of great music events coming up in the near future around Ireland. I spoke about them on air recently and promised I'd mention a few of my faves here, so my picks are......
First up is Global Gathering, which takes place in Milstreet, Cork, this Sunday, 31st July. A magnificent line up including international names such as the legend Carl Cox, Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold (wonder if he'll play the Big Brother theme tune?), David Morales and Tim Deluxe. Home grown talent from Robbie Butler, Jay O'Callaghan, Ronan O and Al Gibbs, among others. The BPMs will be soaring faster than the summer heat this weekend!

The BudRising gigs roll back into town in August, when Basement Jaxx and Underworld play Marley Park on the 20th of August. The Pixies and The Kings of Leon play in Lansdowne Road on the 23rd, and Franz Ferdinand, Maroon 5 and Scissor Sisters play the same venue the following night. A fantastic line-up, I think you'll agree, with a ticket for all 3 gigs only €150 (incl. the dreaded booking fee). Worth a punt.

My final pick of the summer gigs is the excellent Electric Picnic event at Stradbally Estate in Co. Laois. This festival is in it's second year, and if the first one was anything to go by then we're in for a treat. It's billed as 'a boutique music festival', which to me means 'comfort'. And it's the last big gig of the season, with this year's event being a 2-dayer with camping for all you campers. Among those on the bill are Fat Boy Slim, Royksopp, Goldfrapp, Stereo MC's, Lemon Jelly, 2 Many DJs, Damian Dempsey, James Blunt and Mercury Rev. AND they'll have the fabulous Bacardi B-Bar!

First up is Global Gathering, which takes place in Milstreet, Cork, this Sunday, 31st July. A magnificent line up including international names such as the legend Carl Cox, Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold (wonder if he'll play the Big Brother theme tune?), David Morales and Tim Deluxe. Home grown talent from Robbie Butler, Jay O'Callaghan, Ronan O and Al Gibbs, among others. The BPMs will be soaring faster than the summer heat this weekend!

The BudRising gigs roll back into town in August, when Basement Jaxx and Underworld play Marley Park on the 20th of August. The Pixies and The Kings of Leon play in Lansdowne Road on the 23rd, and Franz Ferdinand, Maroon 5 and Scissor Sisters play the same venue the following night. A fantastic line-up, I think you'll agree, with a ticket for all 3 gigs only €150 (incl. the dreaded booking fee). Worth a punt.

Next generation
I got a sneak preview yesterday of the new XBox 360 from Microsoft, at a special event in the Morrison Hotel. I must admit that I'm not a big gaming afficionado, but what I saw did impress me. And I'm difficult to impress.
Hosted in the gorgeous new Printworks Gallery at the Morrison (the first event to be held there I believe), it attracted key figures from the gaming, online and technology sector who were eager to find out more about the new piece of kit. Among them were Fergal Breen from Irish Dev, Nicola Watkins, Micheál Burke of BT Ireland and Sarah Devitt.
No details were discussed of pricing or a release date but I can reveal that the new XBox 360 will be capable of doing a whole lot more than it's predecessor. Actually that's all I can 'reveal' as I don't think Microsoft wish to unload all their secret bells and whistles just yet, but if you are interested than read all about it here. Security at the event was tighter than Joan Rivers' face.

Jameson recently announced the results of their exhaustive Best Irish Film poll, which was conducted in association with The Dubliner magazine. The winner was The Commitments, as voted by the public. Jameson hosted a special screening of the popular movie on Wednesday night, al fresco at Meeting House Square in Temple Bar. Big Brother's Ray Shah, Niall McCrudden, Olivia Morahan and Trevor White were among the brightly lit faces in the audience.

Love It
Last nights parties were perfectly planned as they were hosted in the same building. No time wasted in flitting from place to place. First port of call was The Porterhouse Central, which was formally Judge Roy Bean's on Nassau Street. Owner Oliver Hughes is storming ahead with his plan for world domination with his delicious beers. Down with chemicals and nasty additives I say.
The Porterhouse were celebrating the launch of their latest drinking initiative with a promotion called The Summer of Love. Throughout July and August they will be celebrating various national days, such as Italy Day, Singapore Day and Slovenia Day, among others. And to add to the spirit of it all they have brewed a special beer - Hemp Beer. It really will be the Summer of Love as this brew tastes delicious. It's a natural high.
Grooving to the music were food critic Tom Doorley, Romy Carroll, Dave Morrissey of Lillies, Fergal Breen of Edelman, some of whom made the short journey upstairs to the next party.
O2, Ireland's leading mobilr operator, were announcing details of the forthcoming O2 In The Park summer concert. Lillies Bordello was packed with music lovers who were eager to hear who is to be included in this year's line-up. The big name was Lemar, who has just completed a tour with Destiny's Child. He joins already confirmed acts such as G4, Tyler James and The Saw Doctors.
This year's event will be hosted by TV celebrities Brian Dowling, Caroline Morahan and Fran Cosgrave, who will be roving backstage to interview all the acts and be front of house to keep the masses entertained. Caroline was at last night's launch looking sexy in red, and very much looking forward to the gig, which takes place on Saturday 27th August in Pheonix Park.
Also in attendance were Ryan Tubridy, who enthralled me with his story of meeting Bill Clinton recently, Eric Richards, who came runner-up in the recent TV show Chance to Dance, singer Hazel Kaneswaren, Triona McCarthy, Tabby Callaghan, who will also be performing at this year's gig and Gerry McQuaid of O2.
Should be a Summer of Love at O2 In The Park.

Racing ahead
Girls, you can put the hats and feathers away - the last event of the Fashions on the Turf season took place at the Darley Oaks race day in the Curragh on Sunday. I attended as a guest of Thalgo, the marine beauty experts, who hosted a lunch in the St. Leger Suite, and if the style there was anything to go by then the judges had a tough decision.
The Grand Finale of the last Fashions on the Turf selection at the Darley Irish Oaks Dubai themed day offered the most amazing prize pool yet - a 5 star holiday to Dubai courtesy of Dubai Duty Free, Emirate Airlines, Jumeirah International, and Dubai Golf Club.
Winners and runners up from the 3 Fashions on the Turf faced the judges one last time, and finally Judith Devine from Newry was named the overall 2005 Fashion on the Turf Winner. Runner up was Noreen Savage, from Newry, who was presented with a weekend at the Thalgo Spa at the Hilton Mount Wolseley.
Enjoying a days racing and the hospitality of Thalgo were TV producer Debbie O'Donnell, who's Gina shoes were the envy of all the girls; Ireland AM presenter Alan Hughes; Mary Fitzgerald, looking fab in black and white; RTE presenter Derek Mooney and Suzanne O'Connell of Channel 4's The Salon, who was accompanied by her mother Margaret and sister Ella. Style mavan Celia Holman - Lee stole the show in an amazing jacket and skirt combination topped off with a Philip Treacy.
Question of the day: Which well-known tipster had not a single winner on the day? Better off keeping your money in your pocket!
Never Novelli?
Last night was to be the official opening of Novelli at La Stampa, Dublin's most prestigious new restaurant. A co-venture between La Stampa's Louis Murray and top chef Jean Christophe Novelli, it promises to be a place of excellence and has the city's gastro group abuzz with excitement. This will be Novelli's first restaurant outside of the UK.
The first launch night was postoned due to the London bombing atrosity and last night the event was postponed yet again, circumstances unknown. Maybe Chef Novelli is as difficult as some say? Watch out Naomi!
However, the restaurant has so far gained a huge amount of publicity, even before it's grand opening, so whether this much talked about event takes place is anyone's guess. Not that anyone really minds - it's the fact that Novelli is in Dublin that really matters.

Candy for lunch
Well, the ladies who lunch were out in full force, Louis Vuitton a-flying, on Friday afternoon last for the 10th annual charity lunch hosted by the ever glamourous Miss Candy. Blonde bombshell Miss Candy has been on the go for 10 years? So it seems my dears, so it seems. Alas, she is looking as good as ever. E-mail if you would like to find out her beauty secrets. But I digress.
As always, the lunch was in aid of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, and this year was supported by those generous folks at Fones Direct, who themselves were celebrating their 10th anniversary. Double reason to party in the swish surrounds of Browne's Brasserie.
At the pre-lunch champagne reception I spotted Niall McCrudden, snooker player Ken Doherty, Christina Byrne of BT Ireland, Tara O'Connor and TV presenter Liz Bonin, who flew in to act as MC for the event.
Among the auction items on offer were paintings by Guggi, Carmel Mooney and Darryn Lee. Darryn's piece featured retailer Maria Fusco and model Alistair Davies, both of whom were also in attendance, as were Ian Botham and his wife Kathy, Robbie Fox of Renards and couture designer Peter O'Brien.
Guests were treated to a preview of dsesigner Robert Jacob's Fall / Winter 05 collection, which were elegant and trés chic, as always. Entertainment was provided by the legendary Rebecca Storm, who was accompanied by Alan Smale of the RTE Synphoney Orchestra and Paul Harrington.
Models pack a punch
Also over the weekend I attended a summer party, hosted by model agency boss John Compton at his beautiful Castleknock home. Enjoying the evening sunshine, and rather potent punch, were TV and radio personality Emma Browne, fashion designer Paraic Sweeney and model Jenny Langan.
Actually, there were many models there, as I'm sure you can imagine. One that caught my attention though was the fabulous Glenda Gilson. Looking tanned and relaxed, she regaled me with tales of her recent trip to New Zealand, where she visited to be with rugby star boyfriend Brian O'Driscoll.
The party continued on into the early morning, but not for me. John's punch saw to that!

The sound of summer
Haagan Dazs ice cream, champagne and vodka all mixed together - yum! That was the signature cocktail at the Haagan Dazs summer party to celebrate The Dubliner magazine's Best Of edition. Hosted in the new luxury Baggot Street venue owned by George Sabongi, which incorporates Cristal club and George's Bar and Restaurant, it was a who's who event.
The party was abuzz with compliments for George's new place, which does not actually open to the public until mid-September. Lapping up the evening sun, most of the guests congregated in the two level patio area - a wonderful feature for smokers who must suffer the smoking ban here in Ireland.
There were also plenty of delicious Kinnie cocktails, and cooling down on them were Senator Mary O'Rourke, who looked resplendent in pale yellow, Cindy Cafolla, Brendan O'Connor, stylist Roxanne Parker, TV presenter Kathryn Thomas and film director and writer Gerry Stembridge, who is just about to publish his latest book, 'According to Luke'.
I also spotted Bea Kelliher of The Dublin Fringe Festival, Sarah Jane English, Daniel Ryan of The Thrills, Gavin Lambe - Murphy (just back from Italy) and Niall Woods (just back from France) - all loving the mini Haagen Dazs ice creams, no doubt.
The Sabongi family then extended an invitation to guests to continue the party in Romanza, their Leeson Street restaurant, where I believe it continued on into the night. I stayed only a few minutes as I had to head across town to The George, where Donna and Joe McCaul were making a personal appearance. This was the first time I'd seen them sing live since the Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev.
Indeed the occasion doubled as a Eurovision reunion as I met up with Ann and Keith O'Reilly, Karl Broderick, Alan Hughes and Robert Martin - all of whom I was in Kiev with. Donna and Joe performed to rapturous applause, singing all 5 songs live, including their hit single, Love?, which is in it's 11th week in the Irish singles chart.

Make mine a double
One of the world's best burbons has arrived in Ireland and was launched at a delightful party on Wednesday evening. Woodford Reserve Kentucky Burbon made it's country debut at the luxurious No. 10 Ormonde Quay, at a reception hosted by Chris Morris, master distiller. Straight up or on the rocks, whatever way you like it.
As a 'small batch' distiller, each bottle of Woodford Reserve goes through a rigorous, time consuming process that ensures that only the best is peoduct is made and subsequently brought to us here in Ireland through Edward Dillon & Company.
Guest were treated to a whisky tasting, where we sampled five different brands, to compare them to Woodford Reserve. I'm not a big whisky drinker but even I could tell the difference as Woodford's luxurious taste engulfed me. As I never use a spitoon when tasting, I was a little bit more than light headed afterward (I'm sure you saw that coming 5 miles away!).
Not to worry though, the delicious food at the cocktail reception afterwards stopped me from falling over the edge. Enjoying the evening were Alan Crowley of Edward Dillon, Thomás Clancy, Ernie Whalley of Food & Wine Magazine, Romy Carroll, Lisa McDonald and Caroline Sleiman.
Later on that evening I tripped over to Eddie Irvine's trendy bar, Cocoon, where top model Gail Kaneswaren was hosting her regular Wednesday night event, Curve. A great mix of cocktails and funky music to brighten up your mid-week. As if you even needed an excuse to go out!

Chinese Whispers
Last night saw one of the best parties in a while, as author Marisa Mackle launched her latest book, Chinese Whispers. At a champagne reception in the St. Stephens Green outlet of Hughes & Hughes, guests got the first glimpse of the new book, which is a work of fiction based on the Dublin social scene. Well, I'm sure some of it is fiction!
Marisa, who is now working on her 5th book, was the social diarist with the Evening Herald newspaper for quite some time, so she had a great deal of experience to draw from. The central character of the book is Bunny Maguire, who is launched into the Dublin social whirl and takes to it like a duck to water.
Special guest last night was Marisa's good friend, stunning celebrity Alex Best, who herself has recently published her autobiography. Alex, who is now divorced from legendary footballer George Best, met Marisa while at a party on a yacht in Marbella last year and the two have remained good friends since.
Among those at the bookstore reception were Gerogina Heffernan, stylist Roxanne Parker, actress Tatiana Ouliankina, Peter King and Fergal Breen, Roisin Tierney - Crowe, publicist Paul Allen and the ever glamourous TV3 presenter Lorraine Keane.
Guests then walked the short distance to SamSara, where Louis Murray hosted the after-party. Enjoying the amazing Jean Christophe Novelli food were the devine Eleanor Cullen, Leann De Cerbo and Susan Vasquez (all looking fab in their summer finery), Mr. Gay UK Mark Roberts, Sian Horn of David Lloyd, celebrity agent Colin Angus, Romy Caroll of Cocoon with Liam Coburn and Triona McCarty with jeweller Cathriona Hanly.

Wishing to sample the hospitality of Dublin I felt duty bound to take Alex and Mark on to Lillies, where we were later joined by Marisa and co. As I'm sure you can imagine, the drink vanished quicker than a Vera Wang wedding dress at a sample sale.
Water for Africa
Tipperary Water has joined forces with Concern to help fund water projects in Africa. Each time a specially branded bottle of Tipperary Natural Mineral Water is sold a donation will be made to “Water for Africa”.
Details of the inititive were announced at a lunch in the St. Stephen's Green Club on Monday afternoon, hosted by Pat Cooney, head of The Gleeson Group, who own Tipperary Natural Mineral Water.
“This unique project is essentially a group effort, involving a team of three”, said Mr. Cooney, “the consumer who buys the Tipperary Water, Concern who will be directly developing the water projects and ourselves”.
Initially, one of the countries which will benefit from this initiative is Eritrea, a country that has been seriously affected by drought in recent years. It is estimated that 85% of the Eritrean population are suffering severe water shortages, as rainfall has been scarce and erratic.
“In Ireland we have no such problems and are blessed with an abundance of good quality water”, continued Pat, “over the next 18 months I hope that sales of Tipperary Water will help provide clean water to communities in some of the poorest parts of Africa”.
It is estimated that each person in Ireland uses over 148 litres of water per day, while in some parts of Africa consumption can be as little at 10 litres.
Guest of honour at the lunch was His Excellency Mr. Negassi Sengal Ghebrezghi, the Eritrean Ambassador to the U.K. and Ireland, who expressed his appreciation for the campaign. Hotting up
The weather has been very St. Tropez here lately, and I've been taking full advantage. Perfect conditions for last weekend's Oxegen music festival at Punchestown race course.
I spent Sunday in the confines of the Bacardi B-Bar VIP area, where guests had the pleasure of an extensive BBQ, free Bacardi cocktails and private toilet facilities - always a winner! Mingling around were publicist Sarah Jane English, DJ Hugh Scully, Nicola and Sarah Connolly and actor Philip Brodie.
I also met MTV presenter DP Fitzgerald and filmed a feature with him and his crew. Stay tuned to MTV during the month of August to see it!
Highlights of my Oxegen Sunday were The Killers, who played a hour long live set much to the joy of their thousands of fans. DJ collective Deep Dish rocked the Dance stage with their latest tunes. However it was New Order who stole the show, closing the weekend on the Ticket Stage. As I made my way out of Punchestown, stepping over the empty cans, dodging the trodden-on hot dogs and avoiding the drunken hoards, I wondered how many people will be suffering from sun burn the next day. P20 is the way forward.
Next big music event not to be missed is Evolution in Bray, Co. Wicklow on 6th August.

Support the Arts
It's all about the arts, baby! Or at least it will be in Kilkenny, come mid-August when the Kilkenny Arts Festival kicks off. Details of this years event were announced at a reception in the sultry confines of the Dakota bar yesterday evening.
Now in its 32nd year, Kilkenny Arts Festival offers a fantastic line-up of Irish and international artists. The Festival is recognised nationally and internationally as one of Ireland's biggest and best multi-disciplinary arts festivals.
Music from the island of Madagascar; the Irish author whose work has been described as 'Die Hard with Fairies'; Sexy Sirens and Cyclops the security guard; Le Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, and some laughably brutal buskers (courtesy of Buí Bolg) will be just some of a myriad of treats combining to make this festival a unique and unmissable event.
At the launch party were former film censor Seamus Smith, Noelle Campbell - Sharpe of the Origin Gallery, broadcaster and member of the Performance Corporation, Carrie Crowley, who also happens to be the 'face' of this years's event. I think she's a great talent and wish to see her on our TV screens again. Remember when she was once RTE's rising star and even co-presented the Eurovision Song Contest in 1997?
Also there were Diego Fasciar of the Arts Council, Kevin Hough and Dave McHugh of RTE Radio 1 and publicist Kate Bowe. Speakers were John Purcell, Chairman of Kilkenny Arts Festival's Board of Directors, together with Garrett Keogh, writer/director of Dog Show, which will be appearing at the Festival. Entertainment was provided by OTC Young Associate Artist Mairead Buicke, serenading the crowds with Gershwin's Summertime.
Get yourself to Kilkenny from the 12th to the 21st of August. Or else.

Miss Ireland 2005
At a glitzy gala dinner in the sprawling City West Hotel and Country Club, this year's Miss Ireland was crowned on Friday night. The lucky girl in question is the beautiful Aoife Cogan from Castleknock, who was representing VIP magazine as Miss VIP.
Sponsored by Newbridge Silverware, this year's event was one of the biggest yet with a very high standard of competition - and even higher levels of fake tan and teeth whitening! Aoife, as the winner of the 2005 Miss Ireland pageant, was crowned with an exquisite tiara, created exclusively for the event by Lorcan Harney of Newbridge Silverware and won a contract with top model agency Assets, as well as numerous other lucrative prizes.
The judges, who had a most difficult task on the evening, included TV presenter and journalist Amanda Brunker (herself a FMI), Corrie actor Keith Duffy, star of Celebrity Love Island Paul Danan, although I think he scared the girls more than anything else.
The event was well attended by many famous faces including singer Hazel Kaneswaren (who was greeted at the entrance by ex. boyfriend Brian Fallon), actor George McMahon, TV presenter Derek Mooney, Samantha Mumba, former B*Witched member Sinead Carroll, Anne Boylan and Shirley Beere, Michael O'Doherty of VIP and William Doyle, CEO of Newbridge Silverware.
FMI Pamela Flood was attending her first Miss Ireland contest in 5 years with Armani make-up artist Ken Boylan, while Orla Doyle, looking resplendent in black, was working on her last event for Newbridge Silverware publicists, Looks One PR.
Question of the week: Which well-known Irish architect embarrassed himself at a high-brow party last week? After verbally abusing the event organiser he then went on to steal another guest's drink before concluding the night with smashing a glass outside the building. His designs are clearly not as bold as his behavior.

Legging it
It's that time of year again when Social & Personal, the society bible (in print - Social Dublin is the online bible, natch), unveils it latest Top 100 List. Last night saw a show of the finest pins in Ireland strutting around Lillies Bordello for the announcement of the Top 100 Sexy Legs.
Walking away with the top prize of a fabulous Rimmel hamper was top model Glenda Gilson. Her mother Aileen accepted the prize and a magnum of champagne on her behalf. Glenda flew to New Zealand on Tuesday morning to be with her beau, Lions captain Brian O'Driscoll, who had his shoulder dislocated at a match last week.
Glenda said of scooping the title: “I never regarded my legs as my best asset, but I’m extremely flattered to have been voted number one on this list, it’s a real honour, I can’t believe it. I thought Amanda Byram was going to win it.”
And indeed celebrity Amanda did make the list, along with other leggy babes including actress Orlaith Rafter, Samantha Mumba, Constance Cassidy SC, publicists Sinead Ryan and Joanne Byrne, models Astrid Brennan and Andrea Roche, TV3's Laura Bermingham and Lorraine Keane and Jean Butler, who hosts the Mid Summer Night's Ball tomorrow night in Powerscourt Estate and Gardens, in aid of Forgotten Children. War of the Worlds
The Savoy was packed last night for the Irish premiere of the latest Steven Spielberg flick, War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. This much anticipated movie has had critics buzzing as it was not available for preview in advance of the premiere.
In attendance last night were actress Brenda Fricker, TV stars Pamela Flood and Alan Hughes, Neil Jordan and his son Daniel, Niall McCrudden, Eric McCarthy and David Kaneswaren of boyband ZOO, Neil Hannon with his wife Orla, Sinead Ryan and Malachy Geelan. No sign of the TomKat circus though.
With amazing action scenes, the movie also offers super performances from Cruise, who is back in his most suited role as hyped action hero. I'm making a prediction that the young Fanning will surely be nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award.
It's a summer blockbuster for sure.

Lunch with Loyd
The inimitable Loyd Grossman hosted a lunch on Monday afternoon in The Cellar Restaurant at the luxurious Merrion Hotel which was well attended by a variety of familiar faces. After a champagne reception in the hotel gardens, guests were treated to a gastronomic feast which included foie gras for starter followed by roasted sea bass. It was rounded off with creme bruleé and petit fours accompanied by a glass of delicious desert wine.
As I was sitting at Loyd's table I couldn't resist asking him if he had found any secrets from his time presenting Through the Keyhole! He did share some interesting little tit bits but unfortunately I'm not at liberty to divulge as the conversation was strictly off the record. A wise move Loyd.
Present and correct were FMI and top model Andrea Roche, who is busy with plans for this Friday's Newbridge Silverware sponsored Miss Ireland contest in the City West Hotel, TV3's Alan Hughes with Mary Irwin and her daughter Victoria, socialite Gavin Lambe - Murphy, Ray Shah of Big Brother fame, social diarists Joanne Hegarty and Melanie Finn and PJ Gibbons of Social & Personal magazine.
As it was a beautifully hot day a number of us including Frances Winston, Fergal Breen, Richard Kavanagh and GL-M retired to the Unicorn for a glass of vino, or 4. Among those enjoying a late lunch there included socialite Dr. Robin O'Reilly, Law and Order actor Christopher Meloni (who's in town to star in a production of "A View from the Bridge" at The Gate theatre), Simon Carmody, fashion stylist Sonia Mohlich with Alan Bruton, who has just opened another branch of his Reds hair styling emporium in the Four Seasons hotel, and publicist Sarah Jane English with Aoife Jones of O2.
Good company, good wine, good weather. Life doesn't get much better.

It was a chock-a-block weekend of social activity, with the sun shining for good measure. On Saturday, the fashionable ladies were out in force for the Audi Pretty Polly Stakes at the The Curragh racecourse.
Guests included fashion writer Bairbre Power, Sky News presenter Gráinne Seoige and RTE presenter Pamela Flood who were judging the Best Dressed competition. Others enjoying the day included Georgina Heffernan and Grainne Sheehan, Minister John O'Donoghue TD, RTE commentator Colm Murray and former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds.

Later that evening I attended the 2nd of 3 U2 concerts at Croke Park. With over 80,000 people present, my good friend John O'Driscoll and I were lucky enough to watch the show from the comforts of the sound stage. Also there were Bono's wife Ali Hewson, Gavin Friday, Guggi and Triona McCarthy.

Among the guests in the Horse Racing Ireland box were Alan Hughes and Debbie O'Donnell of TV3, songwriter Karl Broderick, Paul Collins of Today FM, Tamso Doyle and Eithne Donlon of The Irish Times. Editor of VIP Magazine Emer O'Reilly - Hyland looked amazing in a purple number. She and husband Ken are expecting their first child in September

Culture Vulture
The magnificently restored No. 15 St. Stephen's Green was the location for the last in the series of the Laurent Perrier Culture Club events last night. Internationally renowned designer John Rocha was the guest speaker, delivering a humourous and insiteful account of his professional life.
As well as being well known for his clothing lines, Rocha is now getting more involved in interior design since the success of his collaboration with the Morrison Hotel a few years ago. He is currently working on new apartment developments in Bristol and Budapest.
Run in conjunction with The Dubliner magazine, the events have been a huge success, with past speakers including authors DBC Pierre and The Hon.Toby Young, artist Louis Le Broquy, musician Gavin Friday and broadcaster Janet Street - Porter.
The inimitable editor of The Dubliner, Trevor White, gave an endearing introductory speech to Rocha, paying homage to the talented designer.
Enjoying the Laurent Perrier champagne reception (in John Rocha Waterford Crystal glasses, of course) were Odette Rocha and Maureen Ryan, Ciarán Coleman, the ever glamourous Anne Boylan, Stephen O'Carroll and Suzanne O'Dea from Edelman, solicitor Graham Duggan, journalist Frances Winston with Jamie Plenderleith and restaurant critic Ross Golden - Bannon, who is celebrating his birthday tonight with a bash in the Odessa Club.

New Shoes
One of the world's most recognised shoe makers, Clarks, opened their latest concept store on Dublin's Grafton Street yesterday morning. Featuring a clean, white, streamlined shopping environment, which above all else provides a backdrop for showcasing their products.
A new range of footwear supporting Clarks 'Soul of Africa' project were also unveiled. Founded in December 2003 by Lance Clark (6th generation of the Clark family), 'Soul of Africa' enables those affected by AIDS to learn a skill a help themselves, something they are rarely given the opportunity to do. The scheme teaches women of the village how to make shoes, from cutting the pattern to the finsl stiches. The shoes will be sold for €45 in Ireland, with all profits going to 'Soul of Africa'.
Also unveiled yesterday were a specially commissioned array of celebrity customised shoes. Joanna Lumley, Terry de Havilland, Tracey Emin, Shaun Leane, Antoni & Alison and Red or Dead all put their own marks on Clarks shoes. In return Clarks donated €3,000 to the 'Soul of Africa' fund for each pair.
Claire Lalor, Penny Brooks and Caroline Kennedy were among the guests at the event.

The inimitable editor of The Dubliner, Trevor White, gave an endearing introductory speech to Rocha, paying homage to the talented designer.
Enjoying the Laurent Perrier champagne reception (in John Rocha Waterford Crystal glasses, of course) were Odette Rocha and Maureen Ryan, Ciarán Coleman, the ever glamourous Anne Boylan, Stephen O'Carroll and Suzanne O'Dea from Edelman, solicitor Graham Duggan, journalist Frances Winston with Jamie Plenderleith and restaurant critic Ross Golden - Bannon, who is celebrating his birthday tonight with a bash in the Odessa Club.

New Shoes
One of the world's most recognised shoe makers, Clarks, opened their latest concept store on Dublin's Grafton Street yesterday morning. Featuring a clean, white, streamlined shopping environment, which above all else provides a backdrop for showcasing their products.
A new range of footwear supporting Clarks 'Soul of Africa' project were also unveiled. Founded in December 2003 by Lance Clark (6th generation of the Clark family), 'Soul of Africa' enables those affected by AIDS to learn a skill a help themselves, something they are rarely given the opportunity to do. The scheme teaches women of the village how to make shoes, from cutting the pattern to the finsl stiches. The shoes will be sold for €45 in Ireland, with all profits going to 'Soul of Africa'.
Also unveiled yesterday were a specially commissioned array of celebrity customised shoes. Joanna Lumley, Terry de Havilland, Tracey Emin, Shaun Leane, Antoni & Alison and Red or Dead all put their own marks on Clarks shoes. In return Clarks donated €3,000 to the 'Soul of Africa' fund for each pair.
Claire Lalor, Penny Brooks and Caroline Kennedy were among the guests at the event.

Model work
The atmosphere was electric as the assembled guests all tried to catch a glimpse, shake a hand or have a word with supermodel Linda Evangelista at last night's party in the Odessa Club. Looking rather unassuming, but also like a radiant goddess, the Manchester-based supermodel wore a dark outfit which complimented beautifully her newly darkened hair style
We were there to celebrate the good work of the MAC Viva Glam V campaign, which does trojan work for AIDS charities worldwide. Linda presented a cheque for €20,000 to the Dublin AIDS Alliance earlier in the evening.
As the paparazzi congregated outside the club and the bodyguards kept a watchful eye on the proceedings inside, the Moet & Chandon flowed non-stop. Chilling out on the roof terrace were DJ Hugh Scully, fashion writer Ciara Elliott, actress Hilary Cahill and writer Quentin Fottrell, Triona 'Party' McCarthy and Darryn Lee and Eoin Higgins with Larissa Nolan. The supermodel's agent, Didier Fernandez, chatted with publicist Caroline Kennedy and Paddy Bollard.
Among those socialising around the club, and enjoying cosmopolitans, included stylists Roxanne Parker and Sonia Mohlich, model Matthew John, publisher PJ Gibbons and Gary Kavanagh of Peter Mark.
The VIVA GLAM V Lipstick and Lipgloss are the primary fund-raising products benefiting the M.A.C AIDS Fund, 100 percent of the sales of which are donated to people living with HIV/AIDS has raised over $44 million USD.
As Linda left for the Merrion Hotel the party was still in full swing, with guests still enjoying the Moet until well after midnight.

Ho' down
Dublin's VIPs were out in force last night supporting the 'Lillie's Bordello Barn Dance'. One of Ireland's most exclusive nightclubs, Lillies teamed up with children's charity, The Bubblegum Club, for a fundraising event with a difference. The event, brainchild of one of Ireland's top fundraisers Jackie Rafter, was organised in order to raise funds to take terminally ill children to a top holiday resort in the UK, as a direct result of proceeds raised on the night.
Supporters of the event included John Rocham, Graham Bolger and Ronan Barry. Radio presenter Tony Fenton, Richard Kavanagh, Ivano Cappola, actor Killian O'Sullivan and Dick Massey, formerly of the Commitments. Jackie Rafter made the perfect Indian in her themed outfit, whilst many a guy and gal fitted out in catchy cowboy numbers, in order to support the cause.
This event started with the popular, Chicken Skin Review, who along with line dancers got all those in attendance in form for the night's events, which included a margarita, Ketel One vodka and Red Bull reception, with a selection of country themed canapés went down a treat with all. DJ Tommy Stewart ensured all in attendance were dancing into the wee hours of the morning.
Commenting Jackie Rafter, The Bubblegum Club, said: "This was an exciting means of raising funds for the children's summer break, ensuring we can pack in as much fun for the children as is possible. Lillie's Bordello did such a great night in transforming the venue ensuring a real barn dance atmosphere."

Music at Argillan
Argillan is the new Slane - you heard it here first. I was one of the 25,000+ who saw Moby and R.E.M. in concert on Sunday night at Ardgillan Castle in Balbriggan, Co. Dublin. What a wonderful setting! With the castle at the top of a hill which rolls gently down to the stage and the vista of the Irish Sea beyond, this venue is set to be the place for concerts in the future.
Unlike Slane it is easily and quickly accessed from the capital, everyone had a great view of the stage, traffic congestion was at a minimum and the surroundings are beautiful.
Moby's performance was excellent, with him even giving a rendition of the Father Ted classic, My Lovely Horse! A crowd pleaser if there ever was one. Actually, Moby is a huge Father Ted fan.
R.E.M. were good, but for me didn't really get a great momentum going. They did however give a special birthday mention to Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest in Burma for the last number of years. The message, which was beamed to Burma via RTE 2fm, was a touching gesture.
I may be going to see Coldplay tomorrow evening in Marlay Park, either that or meeting Linda Evangelista - tough decision to be made.

Celebrity hairstylist James Brown pictured on Friday at the launch of Clairol's Nice 'n Esay Colour Gloss Seal.

Celebrity hair stylist, and Clairol Creative Director, James Brown paid a visit to Dublin on Friday last to launch Clairol's latest innovation. In the amazing surrounds of the €4.2 million Adelaide Penthouse apartment, guests were intorduced to Clairol's new Nice 'n Easy Colour Seal Gloss.
After a champagne reception, colour expert Laura Oakes gave an indepth lecture on the Nice ‘n Easy Colour Seal Gloss, which is a breakthrough in conditioning technology which helps to seal in beautiful colour, brilliant shine and maintain soft, silky coloured hair for up to six weeks. To date no other in-box conditioner on the market can provide this level of long lasting performance.
I've met James a number of times and each is a pleasure. It's easy to see whay he's ahead of his game, having worked with Heather Locklear, Johnny Depp, Julianne Moore, Juliette Lewis, Kate Moss, Liam Gallagher, Liv Tyler, Nicole Kidman, Patsy Kensit, Catherine Zeta Jones, Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow among others. The guy was in charge of his own team of assistants at London Fashion Week before the age of 23 - he's as good as it gets.
James believes that you have to ‘step out to bring something fresh in’ – by that he means he’s willing to experiment with new ideas before the masses are. He quietly gets on with new, subtle and natural looks, which are picked up on by others and taken to the fashion max. No surprise then that his best friend is Kate Moss, renowned for being ahead of the fashion posse when it comes to setting trends.
After the sumptuous lunch he told me that he was off to Galway for the weekend to visit family. Yet another creative force that Ireland can lay claim to!

Happy Brithday Renards
Last night also saw celebrity nightclub Renards celebrate it's 10th birthday. Owner Robbie Fox hosted a massive pajama party for the great and the good. A large four poster bed greeted guests on arrival - and I'm sure many of them took advantage of it upon departure!
Top model Glenda Gilson looked very sexy in a short negligeé with fluffy pink mules a lá Sex and the City, as she and TV presenter Amanda Brunker presented Robbie with a specially made birthday cake.
Others on the night included publisher PJ Gibbons with Gavin Lambe - Murphy and Richard Kavanagh, Brendan O'Connor, Rolling Stones member Ronnie Wood and Trish Fallon of 1st Option.
The party went on till the wee small hours. Thankfully birthdays only come round once a year.

In other news, I hear that the famous Budweiser marquee will not be making an appearance at next weekend's Budweiser Irish Derby. For many years the famous pavillion hosted 1,000 guests for a sumptious lunch, open bar and high tea on Derby Day. This year, guests will be entertained in the nearby Stand House Hotel.
Without a style HQ I think that the big day next weekend will be the Audi Pretty Polly Stakes on Saturday, with TurfTours.com sponsoring the generous fashion prizes.

Pretty Pink Lady
The Dublin party posse were out in force last night, head to toe in pink, to celebrate the Southern Hemisphere harvest of Pink Lady® apples. Any excuse for a party.
The uber trendy Cocoon bar, which is owned by ex Formula 1 driver Eddie Irvine, was transformed into a pink palace, in keeping with the theme of Seduction - a nod to the temptation and intrigue reminiscent of the Garden of Eden. It was difficult to spot a guest who hadn't adhered to the pink theme. With velvet drapes, lavish candelabras, weaving Pink Lady® apple tree's, a rose petal sprinkled pink carpet and layer upon layer of lusciousness throughout, it was also difficult to recognise Cocoon.
In recognition of the health benefits of apples in general (including cancer-preventing effects), Pink Lady® Apples chose to support the Marie Keating Foundation at the party and invited all guests to purchase a pink wristband on arrival.
As guests quenched their thirsts with Pink Lady® Huzzar Vodka Appletinis, TV presenter Pamela Flood selected the most seductively dressed person who was presented with an appropriately pink Italian neckpiece with white gold and diamonds sponsored by jeweller de jour, Paul Sheeran. Blonde cutie Lisa Harrison was the lucky recipient.
Looking seductive were models Astrid Brennan and Alex Fitzgerald, Joanne Byrne, VIP publisher Michael O'Doherty, Julian Benson and Derek Carberry, Alan Amsby and jewellery designer Cathriona Hanly. Hanging out in the VIP area were Gayle Killilea, Mary Carr and Jackie Lavin.

I guess there's always one person not feeling too pink.
