Jewels for Cures was launched recently. A cancer charity, the campaign aims to raise funds for the Cancer Clinical Research Trust (CCRT) founded by Professor John Crown and based in St Vincent’s University Hospital. The charity is asking for donations of gold, precious jewels, fine art and antiques, which will then be auctioned at a special Jewels for Cures Christmas Auction in early December.

Everyone has jewellery in their jewellery box, which is never worn, either broken or having lost sentimental value. Use the value of your unwanted jewellery or that painting that no longer fits with your house to raise money to fund cutting edge cancer research.

Search for Miss Ireland...

The official launch party of Miss Ireland 2010, in association with Boyle Sports, took place at Bucks New Townhouse and there was a who’s who of Ireland’s fashion scene in attendance.

This is a very special year for Miss Ireland as 2010 marks the 60th year of the Miss World Pageant and competition has already stepped up a notch in Ireland with the highest ever number of entries and a formidable standard.

Miss Ireland will be crowned this weekend at a sparkling black-tie ceremony at the D4 Berkeley Court Hotel hosted by TV3’s Sinead Desmond and current Mr. World Kamal Ibraham. This ceremony is anticipated to be one of the most impressive events of the year with a star studded guest list and judging panel.

Miss Ireland 2010 will then go to China in October to represent her country in the Miss World Pageant and join the ranks of that special Miss Ireland club. Let’s hope she does more than the incumbent Miss, Laura Patterson, who must surely be the shyest beauty queen in history.

Mindfield: 3. Kathryn Thomas and Naoise Nunn; 4. David Cochrane and Carol Hunt with Sean O'Rourke. (Pix. Richard Walshe)

Well that’s Electric Picnic over for another year and despite the sometimes inclement weather everyone there agreed it was a wonderful show. Highlights included Imelda May who showcased her new material, Robyn at Thisispopbaby and the all new Bacardi Arena (with the now legendary Nando’s BBQ backstage).

Some of those spotted over the weekend were Claudine Palmer, Paddy Cullivan and his wife Jen, Triona McCarthy, Kathryn Thomas, Andrea Roche and Rob White, Glenda Gilson, Avril Brophy and Senator Dan Boyle.

It's not all about the music at Electric Picnic. Over at Mindfield, poetry was slammed, books were critiqued, political views were challenged and thoughts were provoked! It's all about the spoken word, with events like the now legendary Leviathan, the perfectly silly Salon du Chat and the ubercool Science Gallery, it was an entertaining and imaginative space to lose yourself in.

The big stages don’t just get the big names, Mindfield played host to the likes of Ryan Tubridy, Howard Marks, George Galloway and David McWilliams along with music legends Simon Napier Bell and Peter Hook.

Roll on EP 2011!
